How to Measure for Shades
Effortless Measuring for Perfectly Customized Shades
Accurate measurements are crucial when ordering shades to ensure a perfect fit and optimal functionality. The two primary mounting options are inside mount and outside mount, each offering unique benefits.

Inside Mount
Installing shades within the window frame provides a clean, streamlined look while preserving the window trim. However, it requires sufficient window depth—typically at least 2 inches—to accommodate the mounting brackets and shades. If your window lacks the necessary depth, an outside mount may be a better option.

Outside Mount
Mounting shades outside the window frame helps conceal imperfections while creating a more substantial presence. This versatile method works well for various window types, including those with shallow frames or deep sills, as it does not require a minimum window depth.

Measuring for Inside Mount Shades
Width: Measure the inside width of the window frame at three points—top, middle, and bottom. Use the narrowest measurement to ensure a proper fit.
Height: Measure the inside height at three points—left, middle, and right. Use the longest measurement to ensure full coverage.
Depth: Measure the depth of the window frame to confirm it can accommodate the mounting brackets and shade.

Measuring for Outside Mount Shades
Width: Measure the desired width, ensuring it extends beyond the window frame. For better light control and privacy, add about 3 inches (1.5 inches per side) to the width.
Height: Measure from the desired top mounting point to the bottom of the window sill or the preferred endpoint of the shade. Adding 1.5 inches above the window opening enhances light control.
Additional Measuring Tips
Use a Steel Measuring Tape: For precise measurements, use a steel tape measure rather than a cloth one.
Measure to the Nearest 1/8 Inch: Accuracy is key—avoid rounding your measurements.
Account for Window Obstructions: Identify any handles, hardware, or obstructions that could interfere with the shade’s operation, such as crank handles, locks, or decorative moldings.
Consider Mounting Hardware: Ensure there's enough space above the window for the mounting brackets, especially for outside mounts.
