Customer Story: Recreating a Dream Dining Room When the Favorite Fabric Wouldn't Work

Most people think custom curtains come down to one decision: pick a fabric, place the order, done. It rarely works that way. You fall for a fabric — the weave, the way it holds light, a shade of beige you keep coming back to — and then the room pushes back. The window is too wide. The track doesn't line up. The header you wanted won't hold.

This is the story of a client who hit that wall. She wanted her parents' dining room to feel continuous with the living room they'd already finished — same linen, same softness, same light. She knew exactly which fabric she wanted. It just couldn't be done the way she'd planned.

Here's how Mindy, one of our design consultants, found another way.

One Fabric, Two Rooms

The client's parents had already hung Elara linen curtains in the living room and loved them. When it was time to dress the dining room, the brief looked simple on paper: match it.

She wanted the two spaces to read as one — the same warm, light-filtering linen, the same quiet calm. And she wanted it hung in a ripple fold, the soft, uniform wave that gives a window its cleanest modern line.

There was just one problem.

When the Fabric You Love Won't Cooperate

The dining room has a large window, and the client needed a full track solution to carry the weight and keep the folds even. When we reviewed the window, the existing track, and the ripple-fold setup she had in mind, Elara — the fabric she'd fallen for — couldn't be made to work there.

It's the answer nobody wants after they've already pictured the room finished. The client had two things she refused to give up: the soft linen feel, and a track that could handle a big window.

She wrote to Freshine and laid out both sides of the problem for Mindy.

Listening for the Atmosphere, Not the Label

Plenty of people would have answered that brief with "sorry, that fabric won't work." Mindy treated it as the start of the conversation instead.

The client's real goal wasn't the word "Elara." It was the atmosphere — the linen texture, the gentle diffused light, the warm beige undertone that made the living room feel settled. Mindy started from those qualities, not from the name on the label.

She landed on Amara linen in Light Beige. Same beige family, a similar light-filtering linen look, a slightly airier hand. Not a copy of Elara — close enough in tone and texture that the two rooms would still read as one continuous space.

Two Ways to Hang It

On a large window, the track matters as much as the fabric. A ripple fold needs a track, not a rod, to keep its wave even — if you're making that call for your own window, we've broken down rod vs. track in more detail. Mindy walked the client through two options.

First, the Kaelen custom motorized track — a strong aluminum track built to carry a heavy curtain and open and close at the tap of a remote. The choice when convenience is the priority.

Second, the Arden ripple fold track — an adjustable track made specifically for the soft wave the client had wanted from the start.

Neither was a generic suggestion. Both were matched to the Amara fabric and to the width of that particular window.

Seeing It Before Committing

This is where the guesswork stopped. Instead of asking the client to trust a description, Mindy had both options drawn up through our free design service — two previews, side by side, so she could see the Amara in Light Beige on each track before spending a dollar.

She reviewed the fabric details, the Kaelen specs, and the Arden track — and chose the Amara in Light Beige with the Arden ripple fold track. In the end, the soft wave she'd wanted from the beginning was the thing she couldn't let go of. The manual Arden kept it. The motorized option, for all its convenience, changed the header she'd fallen for.

The Result

The dining room now carries the same warm, light-filtering linen as the living room, hung in a ripple fold that feels deliberate and calm. The two rooms read as one.
